Lingo Quiz!

As you may know, we here at BmL are shallow cosmopolitan types - rootless Jacobites all. Stoics, Cynics, and citoyens du monde. As such (and given the need to facilitate trade in the greater Solor/ Larantuka region), fort command is quite interested in your second and further language pursuits.

So pray tell, what other languages can you speak, and how/where/why did you learn these? Also, which language do you wish you could speak, and why?

I'll kick off in the comments box, to give the illusion of traffic.

Et tu, liebe bloggers?

Meanwhile, right on theme: Flight of the Conchords!

Well, since you ask, I acquired my moderate Spanish in Guatemala while living with a family there. I'd been on an aid caravan in Mexico before that, and became icnreasingly embarassed about my incommunicado status, so I enrolled for a two week school in Xelaju. Also speak some terrible German, and a smattering of Tetum-Dili.

Would love to speak: Portuguese. For obvious reasons to do with fortalezas (and less obvious ones to do with my research). I can read it ok, but can't understand a single fodendo word of it when spoken, since they all swallow their words nasally and use impossible sounds like "awnnngggg" and "xssssshhhhh".

English. But only when I'm halfway between nicely drunk and f&*ing toast. After that I speak Australian.

Its curious you should mention booze Liamista. My Spanish gets loads better when slightly pissed, and appreciably worse than sober when quite pissed.

Language and booze. In seriousniz tho - I do notice punters' vowels becoming more strine as they advance in pissedness. But only in large groups.

(oops, I did something wrong here)

My first language is brazillian portuguese, and as Lefty E said, it's quite hard to understand it. You'll probably laugh while reading my blog, and possibly understanding nothing. I was born on Brazil, and lived all my 21 years here.

My second language is english, but I'm not good with it. I can read well, but can't write or speak so easily. I made english classes for two years while young, and played english made games all my life, so I learned lots of things by myself.

Some say portuguese is one of the most difficult language to learn, but I don't really know if that's true. I would love to learn german, but it seems to be hard.

And the 'fodendo' word that Lefy E said is a bad bad word. haha

Nao, vossa Ingles "ta baing!", Felipe Your English is very good. Brazilian Portuguese is easier than Portuguese Portuguese - thats for sure. I can sort of read it - but not speak it.

German is hard, I agree! Obrigadinhos!
