Going to Japan

You know, one of the very few perks of being an academic at one of Victoria's premier lesser universities has been the regular work travel on my grants. Sadly, it only covers yours truly, and there's three of us here at Keating Towers.

So, time to cut Ms. and little Miss LE in on the action. We're going to Japan. Its just like when the Brady Bunch went to the grand canyon. Or something.

Rough itinerary: Kyoto, Nara and a bit of Tokyo. Naturally I plugged for Nagasaki - in case there's a Portuguese brick or two intact - but I have been overruled by majority vote.

Over to you, jetsetters - any hot tips in the vicinity of that itinerary?

Ahem. Osaka Castle? The scene of the climactic siege/battle - featuring the kensei Musashi - in 1615 that wiped out the Toyotomi clan, thereby leaving the Tokugawa unrivalled masters of Nippon into the 19th century?

Well, yes - that sounds just the ticket Fyodor. That might cheer me up following the rather disappointing Nagasaki veto.

I assume there's a Kurosawa film?

Unfortunately not, though I can recommend Throne of Blood (Grandmaster K's rendering of Macbeth) and Ran (King Lear) if medieval Japanese warfare is your cup of tea.

Frankly, you're not the man I think you are if it's not, so do yourself a flava, und so weite.

It wont surprise you to learn I've seen "Ran" - but Throne of Blood sounds tops, und so weite gehe Ich - sofort.
